Won the USTA Boys' 18s Hardcourts and the Boys' 18s Nationals in 1987. At age 12, won the USTA Junior Hardcourt singles, and the Fiesta Bowl 16s at age 13. Considered one of the fastest players on the circuit, possesses an all-court game, but prefers playing baseline. Named ATP Newcomer of the year in 1988. An avid fisherman, Chang oftne takes fishing trips with fellow touring pros while travelling. Breeds tropical fish. Son of research chemists Joe and Betty Chang. A devout Christian. Older brother Carl played tennis for California-Berkeley. Introduced to game by father Joe, who still guides his son. Also has been coached by Brian Gottfried and Jose Higueras through USTA program. Coached by brother Carl, who began working with Michael in late July 1991
